WEB170 » What is WordPress?

WordPress is a powerful and fascinating Open Source project and Content Management System (CMS) for bloggers, web designers and developers.

“WordPress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.

More simply, WordPress is what you use when you want to work with your blogging software, not fight it.”

There are hundreds of people all over the world working on it. It also means you are free to use it for anything from your cat’s home page to a Fortune 5 web site without paying anyone a license fee. This is a major plus over buying a CMS that has little, to no supporting community behind it.

What Exactly is a Blog?

The term blog is a compound word formed from the words web and log.

I have found that a blog is a good way to keep your friends and family up-to-date on your activities:

Seriously… your Mother will love this idea. Hi Mom! You can even set up a blog for her too.

Most blogs offer the following features:

  1. Automatic creation of web pages based on the contents of posts
  2. Automatic formatting of web pages based on a predefined template or theme
  3. The ability to include text, images and media via a rich text editor
  4. The ability for readers to comment on and create a discussion about the content
  5. Links to related sites or blogs of similar content

WordPress allows you to update and manage your content using the WordPress Administration Screens:

Where Can I Find WordPress?

There are two different official websites where you can find the WordPress application.

  1. WordPress.com is where you can sign up to get a free blog
  2. WordPress.org is where you can download the WordPress application and find the codex

Sites that Use WordPress

All of the cool kids are using WordPress these days. So, why not you?

Everyday I see more and more sites that have integrated WordPress into their businesses, organizations and artisan lives.
