Posters, Fliers & Handbills Are Still Important

You may think that just having a MySpace page for your band is all you need to be successful in promoting your shows in today’s Information Age. Not true.
We all know that a band’s image is almost as important as their music. But, let’s not forget that no one is going to hear your music unless you have compelling visuals to peak their interest and draw them in.
A well designed and intriguing poster, flier or handbill is still an important way to get someone new to notice your band, check you out and see where and when they need to show up.
The Do’s & Don’ts
It doesn’t take much effort to get your posters, fliers or handbills together. But, to get them right does take a little thought, knowledge and a bit of skill.
Whatever you do, do not put copyrighted material on your poster, flier or handbill! This means that if you are getting images via the Google machine, you do not have the rights to use the image. This is copyright infringement and is a crime.
However, you do need a bold and unique image for your poster, flier or handbill. A snapshot of your back-up singer who parades around as Drunk of the Week with a deer on her head should suffice.
Every poster, flier or handbill should also contain some essential informational items:
- The Day & Month
- Your Band’s Name
- The Other Band’s Names
- The Venue Name & Address
- Door Opening Time
- The Cover Charge
- All Ages or 21+
- Your Band’s Website Address
If you can, get them printed out in color and pass ’em out to all of your friends, put them up at coffee shops, local bars and related venues. And… yes… post them on your MySpace page too! You just might be amazed at who shows up that you didn’t expect.
What are the effectiveness of handbills as medium
You gotta hand ’em out to people. It’s the personal touch that counts, man!
